I was a volunteer spear hunting instructor from 2009-2014 and in that time I personally witnessed and contributed to 12 deaths. Some were accidental self-inflicted spear fatalities, others resulted from failure to maintain the proper distance from my range of throw. You show these guys instructional videos and stress the importance of safety but there's always someone who ignores the warnings and I end up looking like the bad guy just because some idiot got impaled with a spear.

I can throw farther than 3-5 feet when I'm hunting large game like support dogs or lamb, but I have to be running fast enough to propel the spear forward. If I push myself to the limit, in mid-sprint I can almost get 7 feet. It just depends on the terrain. If I'm running downhill there's a better chance I can hit 7 ft. But that doesn't happen often.
