Elderly Man Found Decapitated on Sidewalk

SANTA MARIA -- Police responding to a possible hit-and-run Saturday found the partially decapitated body of an elderly man on a sidewalk in Santa Maria.

The officers realized they were dealing with a homicide rather than a hit-and-run when they found the body of 69-year-old Frederick Holgate, along with an axe several feet away.

Police have arrested 20-year-old Nicholas Bendle in connection with the killing. Bendle's mother apparently called police and said her son was covered in blood.

Resident David Drazdik said he came across Holgate's body moments before police arrived. He saw Holgate on the sidewalk and went to help him, but discovered that his head had been severed off on the right-hand side.

Investigators were trying to determine a motive in the attack.

Santa Maria is about 130 miles northwest of Los Angeles

Man killed in SE Houston ax-slaying overnight

Houston police are investigating the ax-slaying of a southeast Houston man.

The victim's girlfriend became worried when he didn't show up around 10 Sunday night to pick her up from work in the Galleria, so she called her family to get a ride, Houston police Detective Thomas Griffin said. When she arrived at the home she shared with the victim, she found his body and an ax lying nearby.

Police did not release the name of the victim, but family members outside the home on the 5800 block of Hirondel identified him as Lewis Mack Holiday, 41. He appeared to have been struck at least twice in the head by the ax.

Investigators were questioning a man who had lived with the couple for about a week because he had no place of his own to stay, Griffin said. The man, whose name was not released, was found staying at a nearby hotel early Monday.

Holiday's mother, Florida Island, was tearful as she stood nearby.

"My son has children that need him," she said.
